The Guided Tour

In Ad 55 the second Augustan Legion reached Devon and established a fortress at a place called Isca which would become modern day Exeter. Travel back in time with a Roman Legionary soldier as your guide (optional) and take a tour of the Roman sites of Exeter. Find out what life was like in the Legion in Britannia the Northern most part of the Roman Empire.

Your tour will begin with an hour-long walking tour of the Roman City Wall which dates back to the Second Century AD. The wall is approximately 70% intact just over a mile in length and was important for the city’s defence right up to medieval times. Your tour will cover many of the important periods of Exeter’s History and highlight how the city has changed over the last two thousand years.

In the northern most corner of the city wall you will encounter Rougemont Castle the construction of which followed the Saxon rebellion to the Norman Conquest in 1068.

Take a refreshment break at the restaurant of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum followed by a short tour of some of its exhibits.

To complete your tour visit Exeter Cathedral one of the great cathedrals of England with its impressive Gothic Architecture. It is famous for having the longest uninterrupted vaulted ceiling in England as well as a fully working astronomical clock dating back to 1484.

Why not bring History alive by having your very own Roman Legionary Soldier to show you the historic parts of Exeter. Bespoke activities can also be provided for children which can include sticker trails, quizzes and dressing up opportunities to enhance the experience for children of all ages. This is an optional extra and comes at no extra cost.
